An Evidence Based Approach to Massage Therapy (New West)

TPN course

An Evidence Based Approach to Massage Therapy (New West)

Description

This is not another pain science course!  The focus of this 2 day workshop will be to explore touch and movement modification within an evidence based framework.  Participants will gain the confidence and skills to embrace curiosity, explore different touch and movements in a non-structured way that can optimise the comfort of both clinician and patient while enhancing therapeutic outcomes. Every popular course needs a good acronym!  We jokingly call this TPN (Touch People Nicely).

We want to challenge the status quo because massage therapy does not need to be complicated!  Our desire is for participants to gain the knowledge, confidence and skills to realize that massage therapy can be the leading profession in MSK treatment and rehabilitation.

overview

Through the incorporation of an established evidence base, we aim to simplify the application of a biopsychosocial conceptual framework into massage therapy practice. This includes both robust philosophical and scientific frameworks. Participants explore and practice implementing the knowledge of current MSK science and person centred care best practices.  This is emphasised throughout the weekend to maximize massage therapy outcomes.

Participants will learn to conceptualise massage therapy within a framework supported by robust evidence. Participants will learn how to adapt their current practice and be more comfortable in their patient communication and applications of various massage therapy techniques.

We want learners to be comfortable with the uncertainty of clinical practice while understanding the complexity of the current evidence base of MSK treatments.

This workshop will be heavily practical.  The majority of the time will be spent working in partners and/or small groups.

Eric Purves MRSc, RMT has been an RMT since 2006.  He is co-owner of Achieve Health, a multidisciplinary clinic in Victoria, BC.  Eric joined the education faculty at PainBC in 2016, where he teaches a course on chronic pain management.  He also has his own education company, Eric Purves Professional Education, where he teaches a variety of workshops on pain, manual therapy, movement/exercise therapies and rehabilitation principles for health care providers.

His graduate studies at the University of British Columbia focused on the application of research evidence in healthcare practice.  Eric’s presented his research at conferences and has had articles published in various massage therapy journals.

Jocelyn Kirton RMT has been an RMT since 2013. She has taken a special interest in treating patients with persistent pain, specifically in the abdominal and pelvic regions. Her treatment foundations are built around a neurocentric patient centred clinical reasoning framework.  Her educational and practical experiences have given her the unique opportunity to incorporate her knowledge base allowing for a modern and evidence-based approach to persistent abdominal and pelvic pain. In addition to her abdominal and pelvic focus, Jocelyn revolves her practice around guided recovery to encourage and empower her patients to take control of their health by giving them at home strategies to help manage their pain.

As an instructor of Massage Therapy at CDI college, Jocelyn worked with the women’s health in-reach.  Her educational abilities instilled confidence and skill in her students when treating patients with pelvic pain.
Jocelyn also taught the introduction to sports treatment course and oversaw the sports outreach, bridging classroom comprehension and treating athletic patient populations together.

Outside of her practice, Jocelyn wants to impact the Massage Therapy profession by educating RMTs on the positive impact the profession can have for people dealing with abdominal and pelvic pain.  Jocelyn is motivated
for other health care professionals to recognize the benefit patients with pelvic pain would receive from seeing an RMT. In her opinion, it’s time we get comfortable as a profession in managing patients with abdominal and pelvic pain that is evidence informed and safe.
